FIELD EVENTS
– An athlete may take part in only ONE field event
1. High Jump
Competing:
- Approach: The athlete must take a running approach to clear the bar, and jump off of one foot.
- Clearance: The athlete must jump over the bar without dislodging it.
- Landing: Athletes should land on their back or side, ensuring safety.
- Each child gets a chance to trial jump before going to the official competition opening height of 1m for girls and 1m 10cm for boys.
Officiating:
-
- Measuring:
- The bar height will be increased by 5cm and 3cm increase towards the end of the competition. Ensure the bar is level on both sides.
- The uprights and landing area should have a clearance of at least 10cm between them to avoid displacement of the cross-bar through movement of the landing mat coming into contact with the uprights
- Foul Jump:
- Any dislodgement of the bar counts as a fault.
- Jumping off of two feet
- If the bar falls after an athlete has landed and left the mat, it may still be counted as a failure
- Measuring:
- Scoring
-
- Each athlete has 3 attempts to clear a height
- If there is a tie the athlete with the lowest number of jumps at the height at which the tie occurred shall be awarded the higher place.
- If the tie still remains, the athlete with the lowest total number of failures throughout the competition shall be awarded the higher place.
- If the athletes are still equal, they will be awarded the same place
2. Long Jump
Competing:
- Approach: Athletes must run along the runway and jump from the takeoff zone without stepping beyond the allowed mark
- Landing: The distance is measured from the edge of the takeoff zone to the closest point of landing (e.g., the back of the athlete’s nearest body part).
Officiating:
- Measuring Distance
- Use a measuring tape to measure the jump from the end takeoff zone to the closest point of landing.
- Ensure the tape is pulled tight and in a straight line.
- Preparation of pit: Prior to competition dig sand to loosen. Rake and level sand after each jump.
- Foul Jump:
- A foul occurs if the athlete steps over the takeoff zone.
- Scoring:
- Each athlete gets 3 jumps
- Athletes shall be credited with their best performance.
- Best performances should be circled or highlighted
- Ties are broken by referring to the next best jump
3. Shot Put
Competing:
- Throwing Technique: Athletes must “putt” the shot (not throw it). The shot should remain in contact with the athlete’s neck until release.
- 2kg Shot Put
- The athlete must release the shot within a marked sector
- After entering the circle, the competitor must start from a stationary position.
- The athlete must not leave the circle until the shot has landed and must exit the back half of the circle.
Officiating:
- Measuring Distance:
- Use a tape measure to measure the distance from the point where the shot lands to the edge of the circle.
- Ensure the tape is pulled tight and in a straight line.
- Foul Throw:
- The shot lands outside the marked sector
- The athlete steps out of the circle before the shot lands.
- The athlete “throws” the shot instead of “putting” it from the shoulder
- Scoring
- Each athlete gets 3 throws.
- Athletes shall be credited with their best performance
